LMU Men’s Tennis ends season in SAC Championship quarterfinals

BREVARD, N.C. — The three-seeded Anderson Trojans (14-4) swept doubles play and earned two quick wins in singles action to bring the six-seeded Railsplitters’ (7-8) season to an end with a 5-0 win in the quarterfinal round of the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Tennis Championship on Thursday in Brevard, N.C.

Paul Michael Calhoun and Inaki Iriberry set the tone for the match early with an 8-3 win over Carlos Zunino (Samborondon, Ecuador) and Guilherme Rocha (Victoria, Brazil) in the third doubles flight. Joshua Coulthard (Staindrop, England) and Will Sparks (Knoxville, Tenn.) then fell to Juan Carracedo and Mateo Rivas in the No. 1 flight by a final of 8-6.

Nicolas Ascarrunz and Harrison Kansol completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Pepe Batalla (Barcelona, Spain) and Joshua Peress (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) in the second flight. It marked just the fourth loss by the Batalla/Peress tandem, as that freshmen duo ended the 2015 campaign with an 11-4 overall record.

Carracedo and Kansol abruptly ended Anderson’s 5-0 win with straight-set victories in the second and sixth singles flights. Carracedo defeated Sparks 6-0, 6-4, while Zunino mustered just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Kansol.

At the exact moment of the match’s completion, Peress was the only LMU player leading his singles match, as the Montreal product took set one off of Calhoun 6-2. Peress completed his debut season in the Blue and Gray with a 10-4 record in singles play.

The loss marks the end of Sparks’ career with the Railsplitters, as the Knoxville, Tenn. native posted 19 career singles victories, ranking 14th in school history in that department. Sparks compiled the fourth-most doubles win in program history with a 53-18 career tandems record. His career .746 doubles winning percentage is the fifth-highest mark all-time.

It also completes Stefan Hall’s (Stratford, PEI) tenure at Lincoln Memorial. Hall finishes eighth in school history with 26 singles victories. He added 24 doubles triumphs.
