Pineville drops Middlesboro 40-31

First win for the Mountain Lions over the Yellow Jackets in 26 years

Middlesboro’s defensive woes in 2015 continued and the Yellow Jackets surrendered huge chunks of yardage in a 40-31 loss to visiting Pineville.  It was the first win for the Mountain Lions over the Jackets since 1989.

Middlesboro actually held the lead early in the game as the Yellow Jackets started their first drive at the Pineville 39 yard line.  It only took them two plays to find the end zone as Chase Elliott covered the final 32 yards.  The extra point gave Middlesboro a 7-0 lead with less than a minute gone off the stadium clock.

Pineville came right back and drove 65 yards for a score of their own.  Tucker Woolum’s 1 yard run made it 7-6 but the try for point was unsuccessful.  The first quarter ended with Middlesboro ahead by that 7-6 score.

As the game moved into the second quarter, Middlesboro’s next drive stalled at the Pineville 12 and forced a Caleb Heck 29 yard field goal try.  Heck converted and the lead for the Jackets increased to 10-6.

Pineville answered with a 70 yard drive of their own that culminated with Woolum’s dive into the end zone from one yard out.  The extra point made it 13-10 Pineville with 6:12 left in the half.  The Mountain Lions would never trail again.

Brad Fuson made it a 10 point lead with an 18 yard run just before halftime.  The teams left the field at intermission with the Mountain Lions up 20-10.

Every time Middlesboro would cut into that lead in the second half, Pineville would answer with a score of their own.  The Yellow Jackets got as close as two at 33-31 with 2:33 left in the game, but after the Mountain Lions recovered an onside kick, Woolum went 51 yards to seal the deal at 40-31.
