Clay County shoots 55% from the floor, outrebounds Anderson County 21 to 9 to lead 34-21 at the half.

The final totals saw Clay County outshoot Anderson County 56.5% to 33.9%, outrebound them 46 to 30, and win the game 70-55.
They advance to the second round where they will meet Rowan County.

Corbin wins 13th Region boys’ tournament

The Redhounds were dominant in their 65-42 win over North Laurel as they successfully defended their 13th Region crown and will return to the Sweet 16 in Rupp Arena where they’ll play Scott County in the opening round.

Wall Named National Player of the Year

Cousins and Wall both named All-America

LEXINGTON, Ky. – UK freshman John Wall has been named National Player of the Year by Yahoo! Sports, while both Wall and DeMarcus Cousins were named First Team All-America by the online publication.

Wall was also named Yahoo’s Freshman of the Year while Patrick Patterson received Honorable Mention All-America honors.

Wall, a 6-4 guard from Raleigh, N.C., is UK’s all-time leading freshman scorer and assist leader. He leads the Southeastern Conference and ranks fifth nationally in assists (6.2) and ranks fifth in scoring (16.8).

Cousins has set all-time records for Wildcat freshmen in double-doubles with 18, and rebounds with 312, while averaging 10.0 boards a game, second best in the SEC. His 18 double-doubles is the most in the league this season and the most by a Wildcat since the 1973 season.

Additionally, National Freshman of the Year by Sporting News magazine, while DeMarcus Cousins received Freshman All-America status by the publication.

Clay girls win 13th Region

It was dejavu all over again as Clay County defeated Harlan County 43-35 in the girls’ 13th Region championship game at The Arena in Corbin. Last year at Bell County, Clay County cut down the nets after a 43-27 win over Harlan County.

Team Records, Series Notes and Season Notes

  • Kentucky is 29-2, 14-2 in the Southeastern Conference.  Florida is 20-11, 9-7 in league action.
  • UK’s 29th victory is the most for the Wildcats in one season since the 2002-03 squad went 32-4.
  • UK’s 14th league win is the most for the Wildcats in one season since the 2005 team also won the championship with a 14-2 record.
  • South Carolina’s win over Vanderbilt on Saturday clinched the outright SEC championship for Kentucky, the Wildcats’ 44th regular-season title.  It is UK’s first SEC championship since 2005.
  • Coach John Calipari has won 11 conference championships, including five in a row (one at UK, four Conference USA at Memphis).
  • Kentucky leads the series, 87-32.  UK leads the series 44-8 in games played in Lexington.
